In 2011, North Texas began to experience a significant increase in emergency department visits by consumers presenting with co-occurring behavioral health and substance-use related disorders. With limited expertise and technology to address this population, the acceleration of these types of visits led to a dramatic increase in inappropriate and ineffective inpatient admissions. Faced with a crisis of increased costs and poor clinical results, the North Texas Behavioral Health Authority (NTBHA) tasked HL to develop a solution to improve level of care determinations to ensure that patients were treated in the least restrictive setting possible. The end goal was to reduce costs and improve patient experience and outcomes.
HL developed a technology-enabled clinical service platform to provide psychological consultations to emergency departments spread across 5,500 square miles. With more than 30 qualified mental health professionals operating from our state-of-the art AAS accredited Crisis Center, we deployed our clinicians to the ED’s through telemental, video-based, and on-site modalities. We armed our staff with HL’s proprietary Crisis Response Platform (CRP), a purpose-built end-to-end clinical decision support software that empowers clinicians to perform complex evaluations with its embedded evidence-based assessment, intervention, and documentation tools.
Our solution addresses the major pain-points and inadequacies in ED’s in the treatment of behavioral health patients:
